The Labor Day that falls on the May 1, was one of the most important events in Poland during the communist period. The celebrations were preceded by long-term preparations. Since the beginning of March, the society undertook May Day deeds. A few weeks before Labor Day, committees were formed, which ensured that the celebrations would proceed in accordance with the guidelines of the Central Committee of the PUWP. Aside from the official part of the celebrations, Labour Day included the entertainment part as well. In the afternoon of the lst of May numerous art and sport events, as well as games, lotteries etc. were organised in Opole and in other major localities of the voivodeship. These were received with acclamation by the community, and they noted considerable turnout. For that day the authorities arranged sale of products that were difficult to purchase on a daily basis, which constituted one more attraction of May Day celebrations. The article analyses the course of the May Day celebrations in Opole Silesia. Starting early in the morning on the Labourer's Day, propaganda slogans and reports of accomplished May Day actions were broadcast, and delegates from various workplaces, organisations and institutions gathered in order to participate in the manifestations. The main culminating point of the celebration agenda was the parade which set off after speeches delivered by the representatives of the party authorities. The parades were organised in all of the cities and all the commune centres. The parade in Opole had the largest number of participants in the region - in 1955, it gathered 50,000 people.
